What each GitHub plan allows
| Plan | What GitHub documents |
|---|---|
| GitHub Free | Pages publishes only from a public repository, and the site is public. |
| GitHub Pro and GitHub Team | Pages can publish from a private repository too, and the site is still public. |
| GitHub Enterprise Cloud | A project site from a private or internal repository can be published privately, for people with read access to that repository. |
Make a site private on Enterprise Cloud
Open the repository and select Settings, then Pages in the sidebar. Under “GitHub Pages”, open the visibility menu and choose private. GitHub then publishes the site at a new address under pages.github.io, shown on the same settings page.
GitHub allows this only for project sites. The organisation site at <name>.github.io cannot be made private.
Send one page privately without Enterprise Cloud
If what you need is one page read by a few named people, such as a report, a proposal or a demo, you can skip Pages. Build the page as one file with its styles, scripts and images inside it. Drop it on the upload page and sign in, and HTMLRadar gives you a link.
In the link’s settings, under “Who can open it?” choose “Only people I list” and enter each reader’s address in “People and companies”. Under “What readers do before it opens”, choose “Enter their e-mail and confirm it with a code”, then press Create link. Readers need no GitHub account and no HTMLRadar account, and you see who opened the page and which sections they read.
HTMLRadar takes one self-contained HTML file, up to 30 MB. It carries one page, so a site of many linked pages stays on Pages.
If the page stays on GitHub Pages
You can paste the address of a page you host into HTMLRadar to see who read it through your link, but the github.io address stays public. To make the page private, upload the file instead and remove it from your Pages site.
